The work on Luttig Memorial Garden has begun with the building of a retaining wall. There will be a garden path with a fragrant garden to the left of the retaining wall and roses to the right. Visit again for new updates.

When Henry Luttig, Jr. (5/15/1922 - 9/13/1994) died, the family requested that memorials be made to the Elk Grove Historical Society for a memorial garden for the Luttig Family. The Luttig family history in the Elk Grove area began in 1882 when Frank Luttig bought the general merchandise store in Franklin and moved to Franklin with is young child (Henry Sr.) and his niece, Bernardine Hoffknecht. Frank's wife, Meta Sprock Luttig had died in 1879.
It has taken this long to get the yard at Heritage Park designed so a portion of it could be dedicated for this memorial garden. The final steps required approval by the Historical Society Board, Cosumnes CSD and the City of Elk Grove, all of which have some control over what is done on the Historical Society grounds.
The garden is on a slope area, so a retaining wall is being built on each side of the decomposed pathway that will curve through the middle of the garden. The north side of the garden will be a fragrance garden, inspired by the fragrance garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The south side of the garden will be a rose garden.
Most of the work in constructing and planting the garden will be done by family members so the donated $1,250 will be stretched as far as it can go. So far, there have been 72 donated hours spent on the construction of the groundwork of the garden. The work is being done in phases, the first phase is the topography of the garden. The next phase will be installing the underground pipe for the sprinkler system. The third phase will be bringing in compost to spade into the soil and planting mix to fill in where additional soil is needed. At the same time, the decomposed granite will be brought in for the pathway. The fourth phase will be planting, hopefully the fragrance garden this year (if the plants are available), with the rose garden being planted when the bare root roses are available in February, 2009. The fifth and final phase will be the addition of cement benches in the garden.
Anyone wishing to donate time in putting in the garden are encouraged to call Dennis Buscher at 714-2355.
