About Us

Founded in 1976 as the Bicentennial Committee, the Elk Grove Historical Society was created by a passionate group of volunteers determined to save the historic Rhoads School from demolition. That grassroots effort sparked a lasting commitment to preserving Elk Grove’s rich heritage, and the organization soon evolved into the Elk Grove Historical Society—an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and sharing our community’s history.

Today, the Historical Society serves as a steward of Elk Grove’s past through historic preservation, educational programs, community events, and the care of treasured local landmarks. From preserving historic buildings and artifacts to inspiring future generations through hands-on learning and storytelling, we work to ensure that the people, places, and stories that shaped Elk Grove continue to be celebrated for years to come.

With intent to preserve and share the history of Elk Grove and surrounding communities, the Elk Grove Historical Society operates out of Heritage Park and works to protect local historical resources through education, advocacy, and community partnerships.
